ComparePool Builders marketplace showing builder listings with verified badges and cost estimates
01 — The brief

The problem

Finding a pool builder is a high-stakes, high-anxiety purchase. Homeowners are spending $30,000-$80,000 on something they'll live with for decades, yet the search process is fragmented — scattered across Google, Yelp, and word-of-mouth referrals with no easy way to compare.

ComparePool Builders needed a marketplace that made finding and comparing verified pool contractors as simple as entering a zip code. The platform had to feel trustworthy enough for homeowners to share their project details, while giving builders a compelling reason to maintain their listings.

Target audience: homeowners in the consideration phase — they've decided they want a pool, they're researching costs, and they need a shortlist of builders they can trust.

02 — Design direction

Why it looks this way

Pool companies tend toward two extremes: overly corporate (stock photos of smiling families) or overly casual (contractor-grade websites). We aimed for the middle: bright, trustworthy, consumer-friendly — not corporate.

Yellow and gold gradients evoke summer, sunshine, and the warmth of a backyard pool day. Purple accents create a trust signal — it's the color of reliability without the coldness of blue. White card-based layouts keep builder listings clean and scannable.

The "How It Works" flow (Enter Zip → Compare Builders → Get Quotes) reduces the entire funnel to three steps. Verified badges and review counts on every builder card remove uncertainty before the homeowner even clicks.

Design principles

1. Trust at first glance. Verified badges, star ratings, and project counts visible on every builder card before clicking through.

2. Reduce decision fatigue. Card-based listings with consistent data points (price range, rating, distance, specialties) make comparison effortless.

3. Local-first. Zip code search surfaces builders near the homeowner. City pages rank for "pool builders in [city]" searches.

4. Education drives conversion. The cost calculator and financing guide turn browsers into informed buyers ready to request quotes.

What we rejected

Dark or luxury aesthetics. Pools are fun, outdoor, aspirational — the design needed to feel like a sunny Saturday, not a car dealership at night.

We also rejected dense directory layouts (Yelp-style lists with tiny text). Each builder gets a proper card with enough visual weight that homeowners feel like they're browsing quality options, not scrolling through a phone book.

03 — The design system

Palette, type, and grid

Color palette

Summer warmth meets professional trust. Yellow/gold for energy and sunshine, purple for reliability, white cards for clarity, near-black for readable text.

Find your pool builder.
Body
Bold rounded sans-serif for headings creates approachability. Clean sans body at 15-16px for readability across builder listings, cost breakdowns, and financing guides.

Layout architecture

The page guides homeowners from discovery to action:

Hero (zip code search front and center) → How It Works (3-step flow) → Builder Listings (card grid with filters) → Cost Calculator (interactive estimator) → Financing Guide (payment options) → City Pages (114 SEO-optimized local landing pages) → CTA (get free quotes)

04 — The build

How we built it

A marketplace at this scale needs a real framework. We chose Next.js for server-side rendering (critical for SEO on 114 city pages), Supabase for the builder database, and Vercel for deployment with edge functions handling zip code lookups.

Tech stack

Next.js React Supabase SEO City Pages Vercel Edge Functions

Key engineering decisions

Dynamic city pages. 114 city-specific landing pages generated from a single template + Supabase data. Each page has unique builder listings, local pricing data, and city-specific meta tags for SEO. One content update propagates everywhere.

Zip code search. The hero search field hits a Vercel edge function that maps zip codes to the nearest city page with available builders. Response time under 100ms — the results feel instant.

Verified badge system. Builders earn verification through license checks, insurance confirmation, and a minimum project history. The badge isn't decorative — it's backed by real vetting, and homeowners learn to trust it.

Cost calculator. An interactive tool that estimates pool cost by type (concrete, fiberglass, vinyl), size, and features (heating, lighting, landscaping). Gives homeowners realistic expectations before they contact a builder, reducing tire-kicker inquiries for contractors.

Live site

ComparePool Builders now connects homeowners with 239 verified pool contractors across 114 US cities. The platform ranks on the first page for dozens of local pool builder searches, and the cost calculator is the most-visited page after the homepage.
